How to say “gratitude” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
اكتب سطرين قبل النوم، سطرًا للشكر على نعمة لاحظتها، وسطرًا للعزم على تصحيح خُلُق واحد غدًا
Write two lines before sleeping: one for expressing gratitude for a blessing you noticed, and another for resolving to correct one character trait tomorrow.
لِلشُّكْرِ — for gratitude. 'li-' = 'for'; 'al-' = 'the'; 'shukr' = 'thanks', so 'for thanks'.
From: Small Daily Habits →فضجت مما لجت الجدر، فرجعت على الورق الشكر،
So the walls resounded with what the torrents brought, and thanks returned on the leaves,
الشُّكْرُ — the thanks. This is the delayed subject of 'returned', the thanks that came back, so it carries the subject ending though it follows the verb and its place-phrase. The 'the' makes it the specific gratitude, presented as the rain's final, blooming response.
From: Rain and God's Decree →وبشكر نعمته سجد المصلي وخوى،
And in gratitude for His blessings, the worshipper prostrated and became humble.
بِشُكْرِ — with gratitude. A 'with/by' preposition is fused to the front, marking the cause or occasion, and it forces this noun into the 'of' ending. The noun is also the first half of a possessive pair, leaning on the next word to say gratitude for what.
