Arabic vocabulary
How to say “harsh” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فلما قيل اسجد واضرب الشرس الخلق إلا شريس،
Then when it was said, "Prostrate," he struck the stubborn creation — none but the stubbornly defiant.
الشَّرِسَ — the harsh. This definite noun is the thing the command acts on and sits in the object ending. The 'the' marks it as a specific known group, and the object ending shows it receives the striking rather than performing it.
