اعْتَذَرْتُ — I offered an excuse. A derived-pattern past verb with the -tu 'I' ending; this particular pattern often carries a reflexive or self-directed flavour, fitting 'I made my excuse'. Inside the 'if' clause it reads as a supposed act, the condition whose consequence the next words deny.
