وَاشْتَرَوْا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا بِالْآخِرَةِ
And they exchanged the life of this world for the Hereafter.
الْحَيَاةَ — the life. A definite noun in the accusative serving as the direct object of 'bought'. The accusative ending is the grammatical mark of the thing acted upon, and it heads a description with the next word, naming what they traded away.
