How to say “passed away” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
ما تأتي عبرة مثل أن أباك وأمك ماتا،
No lesson is as profound as the fact that your father and mother have passed away,
مَاتَا — have passed away. A past-tense verb in the dual meaning 'the two of them died', with the dual ending agreeing with the father and mother together. Arabic has a dedicated verb form for exactly two doers, so the ending alone tells you both parents, as a pair, passed away.
