How to say “rather” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
قَالَتْ الشِّيعَةُ بَلُّ يَقْصِدُ عَلِيًّا؛
The Shiites said, "No, he meant Ali."
بَلُّ — rather. A correction particle, 'rather/no', that cancels the previous claim and substitutes the speaker's own — it does more than 'but', sweeping the prior reading aside. It opens the Shi'a's counter-claim about who was meant.
