وَلَكِنْ اِشْتَغَلَ بِمُهَاوْشَتِهِ عَنِ الصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ،
But he was so occupied with his bickering that he was kept from the first row.
الْصَّفِّ — the row. A definite noun governed into the genitive by the preceding 'away from': 'the row'. Its al- (assimilating into the sun letter) marks the specific row of worshippers. A describing word follows to say which row.
