فَجَعَلْتُ أَجُولُ فِي الْخَرَابَاتِ،
So I began to wander among the ruins,
الْخَرَابَاتِ — the ruins. A plural noun carrying 'al-' (the), the definite place already in view, sitting in the form the preposition before it requires. It completes the 'in the ruins' phrase, naming where the speaker roamed.
