فَلَمَّا تَصَافَّ الْقَوْمُ كَانَ سَيْفُ عَامِرٍ فِيهِ قِصَرٌ،
When the people engaged one another, Amir's sword had a short dagger in it.
قِصَرٌ — short dagger. The indefinite noun that the framing 'was' has been building toward: it is the new thing being introduced into the scene, left non-specific because it is fresh information. Its indefinite ending marks it as 'a' such item rather than one already known to the listener.
