Arabic vocabulary
How to say “something” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
كُلَّمَا قِيلَ لَكَ شَيْئًا تَقَبَّلْهُ
Whenever something is said to you, accept it.
شَيْئًا — something. An indefinite noun ('something') in the object ending, working as what gets said. The indefinite ending leaves it deliberately vague, any unspecified thing, which is exactly what the 'whenever' rule needs: it covers all cases without naming any.
From: Seeking Refuge from the Devil →وحسن الثناء عليه شيئاً لم يفتح على أحد قبلي ثم يقال يا محمد ارفع رأسك، سل تعطه، واشفع تشفع،
The praise of him was so excellent, something not granted to anyone before me. Then it is said, O Muhammad, raise your head, ask and you will be given, and intercede and your intercession will be accepted.
شَيْئًا — something. An indefinite noun in the object form, summing up the whole praise as 'a thing'; the lack of 'the' keeps it unspecified and the ending marks its role. It is then qualified by the relative clause that follows.
