Arabic vocabulary
How to say “the ascetics” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَإِنِّي تَدَبَّرْتُ أَحْوَالَ أَكْثَرِ الْعُلَمَاءِ وَالْمُتَزَهِّدِينَ،
And indeed I reflected on the conditions of most of the scholars and the ascetics.
وَالْمُتَزَهِّدِينَ — and the ascetics. The wa- here links a second group onto the first with 'and', and because it is coordinated with the scholars it copies their 'of' (genitive) ending. The word itself is an active participle, a noun built from a verb to name 'the ones who do X', here 'those practising self-denial'.
