How to say “most” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وَهَذِهِ حَالُ أَكْثَرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الَّذِينَ خَلَطُوا عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا
And this is the condition of most believers, who mix a good deed with a bad one.
أَكْثَرِ — most. A quantifier noun meaning 'the greater part', sitting as the owner in the 'of' pairing and itself owning 'the believers' next. So you get a stacked possession: 'the condition of the most of the believers'.
From: Staying Firm in Faith →فَلَا غَرَابَةَ أَنْ يَكُونَ مِنْ أَكْثَرِ الْمُصَنِّفَيْنِ فِي الإِسْلَامِ،
So it is no surprise that he was among the most prolific authors in Islam,
أَكْثَرِ — most. A superlative word, 'most', heading 'the most prolific authors'. Arabic uses one fixed superlative form and builds 'the most...' by following it with the group; here it is the owned head of a possessive 'most of the authors' pairing.
From: A Life of Reading and Writing →وَلَيْسَتْ قُوَّةُ الشَّيْطَانِ بِأَكْثَرِ قُوَّةٍ مِنْ مَغْفِرَةِ الرَّحْمَنِ فِي قُلُوبِ أَهْلِ الإِيمَانِ
Satan's power is not greater than the forgiveness of the Merciful in the hearts of the believers.
بِأَكْثَرِ — by greater. The 'bi-' here is the extra 'by' that idiomatically rides on a negated comparison ('is not BY greater'), a standard way Arabic underlines 'is in no way greater'. It governs the comparison word in the genitive ending and tightens the denial.
From: Seeking Refuge from the Devil →وَإِنِّي تَدَبَّرْتُ أَحْوَالَ أَكْثَرِ الْعُلَمَاءِ وَالْمُتَزَهِّدِينَ،
And indeed I reflected on the conditions of most of the scholars and the ascetics.
أَكْثَرِ — most of. A 'most of' quantifier that works by leaning on the noun after it: it heads a possessive pairing, so the word that follows takes the 'of' (genitive) ending and names the group being quantified. It is itself the owned middle link in the longer 'conditions of most of the scholars' chain.
