How to say “the elder” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَقَضَى بِهِ لِلْكُبْرَى مِنْهُمَا
So he ruled that it belonged to the elder of the two.
لِلْكُبْرَى — for the elder. A 'for/in favor of' preposition is welded to a definite describing-word used on its own as 'the elder one'. The 'for' marks the beneficiary of the ruling, the one it goes to. The al- on the noun makes the elder a specific, identified person, and the preposition forces the post-preposition case.
