أَوْ نَالَ الْقَضَاءَ فَسَعَى فِي حِفْظِ مَنْزِلَتِهِ،
Or he attained the judgeship and strove to preserve his position,
القضاءَ — the judgeship. A noun carrying 'al-' (the), standing as the thing attained and so in the object form the verb before it governs. The case ending marks it as what the verb's action lands on, the post he came to hold.
