قُلْتُ وَالنَّفْسُ فِيهَا قُوَّتَانِ قُوَّةُ الإِقْدَامِ وَقُوَّةُ الإِحْجَامِ
I said, and the soul, in it are two powers: the power of taking action and the power of refraining.
وَالنَّفْسُ — and the soul. wa- opens the quoted reflection, marking 'the soul' as the definite topic. The conjunction links it onto the prior point, and the al- names the known thing being discussed.
