And the souls melted because of it, consumed by burning.
الْأَنْفُسُ — the souls. A plural noun made definite by al- 'the'. It is the subject doing the melting, and its nominative ending marks it as the doer; placed after its verb, it is the thing the feminine-singular verb agrees with.
