إِمَّا كُنَّا ظَنَّاً أَنَّ أَوْلَادَكَ لَا يَتَغَيَّرُونَ
Either we had thought that your children would not change.
يَتَغَيَّرُونَ — they change. Present-tense verb with the plural 'they' in its ending, denied by the la before it. Inside the thought-clause it states what they expected the children not to do.
