تَلاَعَبْتُ — I would have toyed. A past verb on a reciprocal/playful pattern carrying a first-person '-tu' as subject, 'I toyed'. Negated and inside the counterfactual it reads 'I would not have toyed', the unreal consequence. It leads into 'with them' naming whom he would have spared.
