Thus, those in authority consist of two types: the scholars and the rulers.
صِنْفَيْنِ — two types. This is the dual, Arabic's dedicated 'exactly two' form, folded into the ending of the noun rather than added as a separate 'two'. It is the complement of 'were', so it takes the accusative dual ending: 'were two kinds'.
