Arabic vocabulary
How to say “was treacherously slain” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَكَمْ مِنْ شُجَاعٍ فِي صَفِّ الْحَرْبِ اُغْتِيِلَ،
How many a brave man in the ranks of battle was treacherously slain.
اُغْتِيِلَ — was treacherously slain. This is the passive form of the verb: the brave man did not slay; he was slain, and by stealth. Arabic marks the passive by reshaping the inner vowels rather than adding a helper like English 'was', so the unnamed killer stays hidden and only the deed to the victim remains.
