فتعجب الناس من قوله،
The people were amazed at his words,
فَتَعَجَّبَ — so were amazed. The 'fa-' marks a consequence, 'so then', and the verb is a reflexive-type past form meaning the people were filled with wonder. The 'wonder happened in them' sense is built into the verb's shape, where the doers also undergo the reaction. The subject, the people, follows.
