How to say “what” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
قَالَ عَلَىٰ أَيِّ لَحْمٍ
He said, "On what meat?"
أَيِّ — what. This is the question word 'which / what', heading the narrowing question; it takes its case from its role and, as the first half of a 'which of...' phrase, leans on the following noun. Together they ask precisely which meat.

And she did not know from which of the places it would come down.
أَيِّ — which of. A question-word meaning 'which', carrying the 'of...' ending because the preposition 'from' governs it. It heads a possessive pairing with the next noun, so it reads 'which of...'. It opens the indirect question about the unknown point of descent.
