Arabic vocabulary
How to say “why not” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
قَالَ أَفْلَا جَارِيَةً تُلاَعِبُهَا وَتُلاَعِبُكَ
He said, "Why not a slave-girl who will play with her and with you?"
أَفْلَا — why not. This bundles a question marker with a negation to form a 'why not...?' that is really a gentle suggestion, not a real question. Its job is to nudge the listener toward the idea that comes next rather than to ask for information.
