How to say “Abu” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
تَعْلَمُ مَنْ تُخَاطِبُ مُنْذُ ثَلاَثِ لَيَالٍ يَا أَبَ هُرَيْرَةَ
You know whom you have been addressing for three nights, O Abu Hurayrah.
أَبَ — Abu. This is the 'father-of' element of a teknonym (a by-name built from 'father of...'), here in its address shape because the call-particle governs it. It heads the by-name and links to the part after it to form the full nickname of the person hailed.
From: The Verse of the Throne →فَقَالَ لِيَّ أَحَدُهُمْ يَا أَبَ الْقَاسِمُ أَنتَ
Then one of them said to me, "O Abu al-Qasim, are you?"
أَبَ — father. 'Father (of)', the lead word of a teknonym (an 'Abu so-and-so' nickname). Standing right after the call-particle, it is in the addressed form, and it leans on the name after it to complete the title 'O father of al-Qasim'.
