How to say “ailment” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وينسى ما يلحقه من الأمراض والأسقام، وما يعتريه من الكبر والهرم،
And forgets what afflicts him of diseases and ailments, and what befalls him of old age and senility,
وَالْأَسْقَامِ — and ailments. Joined by 'and', a second noun in the same list, still governed by the earlier 'of'. Its 'the' marks ailments as a known class, coordinated with diseases.
From: A Path to Mercy →وإذا أمسى كأنه مريض أضناه السقم
And when it was evening, it was as if he were a sick person worn out by illness.
السُّقْمُ — the illness. This noun is the delayed subject of 'wore out', the thing doing the wearing, so it stands in the subject form. The 'the' presents the illness as the specific cause already pictured.
From: Grief of the Prophet's Grandson →وقال عليه الصلاة والسلام إن لله عبادا يضن بهم عن القتل والسقم،
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, God has servants who He spares from killing and illness.
وَالسُّقْمِ — and the illness. A fused 'and' plus a noun with 'the', 'and the illness', the second harm, sharing the (genitive) form governed by the earlier 'from'. It completes the pair they are spared.
