Arabic vocabulary
How to say “be called” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
لَوْلَا صِحَة مامته مَا قيل ابْن الحنيفة
If not for the soundness of his leadership, he would not be called the son of Hanifiyyah.
قِيلَ — it was called. This is the passive of 'to say', and Arabic forms it not with a helper word but by changing the inner vowels, an 'ee' sound replacing the active 'aa'. No sayer is named; the focus is purely that the title was given.
