فَبَقِيَتْ مَرَارَةُ الأَسَى بِلَا مُقَاوِمٍ،
So the bitterness of grief remained, with no one to oppose it,
مَرَارَةُ — the bitterness. A noun ('the bitterness'), the subject of 'remained', and the head of an 'of' pairing with the next word ('bitterness OF grief'). As the first half it gives up its own 'the' and draws definiteness from 'grief', which it owns.
