Arabic vocabulary
How to say “but” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَلَكِنِ إِئْتُوا عِيسَىٰ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ
But bring Jesus, the servant of Allah.
وَلَكِنِ — but. Two elements fused: the opening wa- and the contrast-particle 'but'. The wa- ties this to the prior refusal while the 'but' overturns it, redirecting the listeners to a new person. Its final vowel is a smoothing adjustment before the next sound, not a meaning change.
