Arabic vocabulary
How to say “but I” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
لَفَعَلْتُ، وَلَكِنِّي أَرْغَبُ بِكُمَا عَنْ ذَلِكَ وَأَزْوِيهِ عَنْكُمَا،
I would have done it, but I prefer to spare you both that, and I will keep it away from you both.
وَلَكِنِّي — but I. This joins the 'and' connector to a 'but' particle that sets up a contrast with what was just said, and fused to its end is -i, the 'I' pronoun. The 'but' word is the grammatical pivot, turning the statement from the hypothetical to what is actually chosen. So one word carries 'and', 'but', and 'I'.
