وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَصْبِرُ بِجَهْدٍ وَمِشْقَةٍ
And among the people are those who endure with effort and hardship.
بِجَهْدٍ — with effort. The preposition 'bi-' (with / by means of) on a noun, which forces the genitive. Here 'bi-' marks the cost at which they endure: with effort, opening a short pair of hardships.
