Arabic vocabulary
How to say “for the duration of” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَأَقَامَ بِوَاسِطِ خَمْسِ سِنِينَ يَخْدِمُ نَفْسَهُ بِنَفْسِهِ،
He remained for five years, attending to his own needs by himself.
بِوَاسِطِ — for the duration of. This is the preposition bi- attached to a place name (Wasit). With a verb of staying, bi- marks the location where the staying happened, anchoring him at that spot. The token therefore fuses 'in/at' with the place into one word, and the place name takes the genitive that bi- forces on it.
