Arabic vocabulary
How to say “establish” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
افصل بين الحاجة والرغبة؛ الحاجة تُقيمك، والرغبة إن تُركت بلا ضابط تستهلكك
Distinguish between need and desire; need establishes you, while desire, if left unchecked, consumes you.
تُقِيمُكَ — establishes you. Present-tense verb 'tuqim' = 'it sets up, keeps standing'; '-ka' = 'you', so 'keeps you standing'.
From: On Sincerity →ولما أقام الحجة وبين الحجة إرتهن كل نفس بكسبها وآخذها بذنبها
And when the proof was established and made clear, every soul is held accountable for its deeds and taken for its sins.
أَقَامَ — established. This is a plain past-tense verb in the pattern meaning to set up or establish, with its 'he' subject built in. The doer is God; the verb names the firm setting-up of the proof, with the subject carried inside.
From: Prayer and Charity →ثم أقام سبحانه البرهان القاطع على صدق رسوله
Then He, Exalted, established the decisive proof of the truthfulness of His Messenger.
أَقَامَ — established. A past-tense verb meaning he set up or established, with the doer 'he' inside the form. On its causative pattern it means to make something stand firm, here erecting a proof, and as usual the verb leads before its objects appear.
From: False Prophets →فَأَقَامَ مَعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ
So he stayed with him, then he said.
فَأَقَامَ — so he stayed. Led by fa-, the tight connector chaining this onto the prior scene. The past verb carries its own 'he' subject and a 'stayed/took up residence' sense.
From: A Stranger Finds the Prophet →وَأَقَامَ بِوَاسِطِ خَمْسِ سِنِينَ يَخْدِمُ نَفْسَهُ بِنَفْسِهِ،
He remained for five years, attending to his own needs by himself.
وَأَقَامَ — and remained. The wa- continues the biographical thread. The verb is past tense with its 'he' subject inside, reporting a single stretch of staying. Unlike the surrounding habitual sentences, this is a plain completed past: he settled and remained for a set period.
