Arabic vocabulary
How to say “gaze” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
﴿قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ﴾، وَنَظَائِرُهُ
'Say to the believers to lower their gaze', and similar passages.
أَبْصَارِهِمْ — their gaze. A plural noun, 'eyes/gazes', closed off with a 'their' ending that points back to the believers just mentioned. The single word thus means 'their gazes'; Arabic attaches the possessor straight onto the noun instead of using a separate word like English 'their'.
