Arabic vocabulary
How to say “hope” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وَأَلْهَاهُمْ طَوْلُ الْأَمَلِ،
And the long duration of hope distracted them.
الْأَمَلِ — hope. The al- marks this as definite, and as the owned tail of the possessive chain it carries the 'of' (genitive) ending, naming what is long: hope. It completes 'the length of hope', the drawn-out expectation that did the distracting.
From: Preparing for Death and Repentance →ويحك ما أطول أملك وأسوأ عملك
Woe to you! How long are your hopes, and how bad are your deeds!
أَمَلَكَ — your hope. A noun 'hope/wishful expectation' with 'your' (masculine singular) attached, and it is what the exclamation marvels at - the object of 'how long is...'. The attached possessor addresses the listener, so 'your hope'. The construction casts the listener's long-range hopes as astonishingly drawn-out.
