Arabic vocabulary
How to say “I rely” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَعْتَمِدُ بِكَبِدِي عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْجُوعِ،
If I were to lean my side on the ground because of hunger,
لَأَعْتَمِدُ — I would lean. The verb carries a prefixed emphatic marker, a short 'la-' that adds stress and works together with the earlier 'if' to give a 'truly would lean' force. The body of the word is a present-tense verb with the 'I' subject built in. This combination is a classic way Arabic dramatises a past habit or insistence without any helper words like English 'would'.
