فَأَصْبَحُوا يَعْبُدُونَ الْأَصْنَامَ فِي الْبَيْتِ الْحَرَامِ
So they began to worship idols in the Sacred House.
الْأَصْنَامَ — the idols. A definite plural in the accusative shape, the direct object that the worship is aimed at. The ending marks it as the thing acted upon, and 'al-' fixes it as the specific idols.
