How to say “leading figure” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
حَتَّى صَارَ عَلَمًا مِنْ أَعْلَامِ بَغْدَادِ،
until he became one of the leading figures of Baghdad.
عَلَمًا — a leading figure. An indefinite noun, the predicate of 'became', which is why it takes the object-style ending with the indefinite two-stroke marking you hear as a final -an. It names what he turned into. It is also the head of the possessive pairing completed by the place name ahead.
