The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his companions set out until they reached Badr before the polytheists, and the polytheists came.
حَتَّى — until. This particle 'until' marks the end-point of the setting-out, 'until they outran...'. Here it introduces a completed result rather than a goal, so the verb after it stays in its plain past; its job is to mark where the journey reached.
