Arabic vocabulary
How to say “nourishment” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وَنَدُرَ مِثَالُهُ أَنَّ شَهْوَةَ الْمَطْعَمِ إِنَّمَا خُلِقَتْ لاجْتِلابِ الْغِذَاءِ
A rare example of this is that the craving for food was only created to draw nourishment.
الْغِذَاءِ — nourishment. 'al-' = 'the'; the 'of' word (genitive).
From: When Desire Exceeds Its Bounds →فإذا اكتفى بدون الشبع، حسن اغتذاء بدنه، وصلح حال نفسه وقلبه
If he is content with less than satiety, his body is well-nourished, and his soul and heart are in good condition.
اغْتِذَاءُ — nourishment. This is the front half of 'nourishment of his body', a possessive pairing with no word for 'of'. It is the subject of 'becomes good' before it and takes its definiteness from the owner that follows.
From: Eating in Moderation →كان من سنة الهند أنهم إذا أرادوا تناول الغذاء اغتسلوا
It was a custom in India that when they wanted to eat, they would bathe.
الغِذَاءِ — the food. The al- makes this definite, 'the food'. As the owner closing the pairing 'the taking of the food', it stands directly after the action-noun with no word for 'of' and takes the -i possessor ending.
