وَكَانَ سَيّده إِذا رَآهُ عَبث بِهِ وَيسمع مِنْهُ الْكَلِمَة الحكيمة فيعجب مِنْهُ
And his master, when he saw him, would ridicule him and hear the wise word from him, and be amazed by it.
يَعْبَثُ — he would ridicule. Present-tense verb; with 'kana' above it reads as a habitual past ('would...'); subject 'he' built in.

And whenever his master saw him, he would play with him.
عَبث — he would play. A past verb of playing/teasing with the 'he' subject built in; it is the main action triggered each time by 'whenever'. Under the habitual 'kana' frame it reads as 'would play with', a repeated past act. The doer lives inside the verb.
