Then, some students of knowledge from the sons of Persia and Rome became obsessed with a type of deceptive argumentation.
بَعْضَ — some of. 'some of', accusative (the subject of 'inna'), head of an 'of' pairing with 'students'.

However, some foolishness is less harmful than others.
بَعْضَ — some. This noun is the subject seized by the preceding 'that' particle, hence its accusative ending; it is also the head of an 'of' pairing ('some of...'). So it does double duty: subject of the clause and owner of the noun that follows. Its accusative is the grammatical effect of the particle.
