How to say “the darkness” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
حَتَّى يَأْتِيهُمَا بِخَبَرِ ذَلِكَ حِينَ يَخْتَلِطُ الظَّلاَمُ،
until news of that reaches them both, when darkness gathers,
الظَّلاَمُ — the darkness. Carries the 'al-' that makes it definite, and it is the doer of the verb just before it (Arabic often puts the subject after its verb). Being the named subject, it sits in the plain doer ending rather than the 'of' or object ones.
