How to say “the first” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وَمَا أَوَّّلُ طَعَامِ يَأْكُلُهُ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ
And what is the first food the people of Paradise will eat?
أَوَّلُ — the first. An ordinal noun 'the first' heading an ownership pairing with 'food': the first of food. As head it draws on the noun after it, framing the question as 'what is the foremost food'.
From: What Was Created First →وَهِيَ يَا أَوَّّلُ يَا آخِرُ
And it is: O First, O Last.
أَوَّّلُ — First. The divine name 'the First', here the one being called upon after 'O'. As the addressed word in a direct call it stands in the bare subject-style form rather than taking 'the' or a case from a preposition. It is the object of the preceding vocative particle.
