Arabic vocabulary
How to say “the other (feminine)” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
قَالَ فَرَأْتُ الْبَرَاءَ يَضْرِبُ إِحْدَى يَدَيْهِ عَلَى الأُخْرَى يَنْفِضُ،
He said: I saw al-Bara' strike one of his hands against the other and shake it off.
الأُخْرَى — the other (feminine). A feminine adjective standing in for 'the other [hand]', made definite by its fused 'al-' (the) and matching the feminine gender of the hand it refers to. Governed by the 'against' preposition, it takes the 'of'-style ending. Agreement in gender is what shows it pairs with the hand.
