Arabic vocabulary
How to say “the rock” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَإِذَا أَنَا بِرَاعٍ مُقْبِلٍ بِغَنَمِهِ إِلَى الصَّخْرَةِ
Then I came upon a shepherd approaching the rock with his flock.
الصَّخْرَةِ — the rock. A definite noun, made so by its fused 'al-' (the), standing as the destination governed by the 'to' before it, so it takes the 'of'-style ending. Its first letter is a sun-letter, so the 'al-' blends into a doubled 's' in speech (as-sakhra). It names where the shepherd was heading.
