How to say “the sun” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَٱِرْتَحَلْنَا بَعْدَ مَا مَالَتِ اَلْشَّمْسُ،
So we set out after the sun had inclined.
اَلْشَّمْسُ — the sun. A definite feminine noun, the sun, made so by its fused 'al-' (the), standing as the subject of 'inclined' before it, so it takes the subject ending. Being feminine, it is what triggered the feminine '-at' on that verb. Its first letter is a sun-letter, so the 'al-' blends into a doubled 'sh' in speech (ash-shams).
