Arabic vocabulary
يَكُونُوا is how you say “they be” in Arabic. Hear it pronounced and see it used in a real example sentence from classical texts below.
وَيَجِبُ أَنْ يَكُونُوا عَلَى مَعْرِفَةٍ بِهِ،
And they must be knowledgeable about it.
يَكُونُوا — they be. A 'to be' verb whose ending -u marks a third-person 'they', pushed into its subjunctive shape by the 'that' before it — which is why the usual final -na drops to a bare 'they' form. The mood marks the required state, governed by 'must'. It carries the plural subject inside it.
