  'Perhaps a fasting person gains nothing from his fast except hunger and thirst, and perhaps one who prays gains nothing from his prayer except sleeplessness.'

  وَالْعَطَشُ — and thirst. The connector 'and' joined to a definite noun, 'the thirst', paired with 'the hunger', both carrying 'the'. It adds the second thing left after the exception, parallel to the first.
