وَكَانَ أُمَيَّةُ إِذَا مَرَّ بِالْمَدِينَةِ نَزَلَ عَلَى سَعْدِ،
Whenever Umayya passed by the city, he would stay with Sa'd.
أُمَيَّةُ — Umayya. A proper name as the subject (nominative) of the 'was' verb before it — the one whose habit is being described. Verb-then-subject is the ordinary order here.
