Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from Sa'd ibn Mu'adh,
He said that he was a friend of Umayya ibn Khalaf.
Whenever Umayya passed by the city, he would stay with Sa'd.
Whenever Sa'd passed through Mecca, he would stay with Umayya.
When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, arrived in Medina, Sa'd set out intending to perform umrah.
So he stayed with Umayya in Mecca.
He said to Umayya, "Find for me a time of seclusion; perhaps I may circumambulate the House."
So he went out with him around midday.
So Abu Jahl met them and said, "O Abu Safwan,"
Who is this with you? Then he said, "This is Sa'd."
So Abu Jahl said to him, "Do I not see you moving about in Mecca in safety?"
And indeed you sheltered the young people.
And you claimed that you would support them and help them,
By God, had you not been with Abu Sufyan, you would not have returned safely to your family.
Sa'd said to him and raised his voice at him.
By God, if you prevent me from this, I will surely prevent you from something that will be harder on you than this.
Your way is toward the city.
Umayya said to him, 'Do not raise your voice, O Sa'd.'
By Abu al-Hakam, the chief of the people of the valley.
Sa'd said, 'Leave us alone, O Umayya.'
By Allah, I heard the Messenger of Allah say, "Indeed, they will kill you."
He said, "In Mecca he said, 'I do not know.'"
So Umayyah was seized with intense alarm at that.
So when Umayya returned to his household, he said, 'O Umm Safwan,'
Have you not seen what Sa'd said to me?
She said, "And what did he say to you?"
He said, "He claimed that Muhammad had told them that they were my killers."
So I said to him in Mecca. He said, "I do not know."
So Umayya said, "By God, I will not leave Mecca."
When the day of Badr came, Abu Jahl roused the people and said, "Save your caravan!"
So Umayya disliked that he go out.
Then Abu Jahl came to him and said, "O Abu Safwan,"
Indeed, whenever people see you, they say that you have fallen behind.
And you are the leader of the people of the valley; they lagged behind with you.
So Abu Jahl did not cease at him until he said, "As for when you have overcome me,"
By God, I will certainly buy the finest she-camel in Mecca.
Then Umayya said, "O Umm Safwan, prepare me."
She said to him, "O Abu Safwan, have you indeed forgotten what your brother the Yathribi told you?"
He said, "No; I do not intend to go with them except nearby."
When Umayya went out, he would not stop at any lodging except to tether his camel.
He continued like that until God, the Exalted and Glorious, killed him at Badr.
